Khawam Company had been established by Haji Mohammed Rateb s/o Hamdi Al-Khawam,
born in Damascus in /1918/, to a famous Damascene family from Qanawat Alley. Late
Haji MHD Rateb lived as an orphan, where his father died when he was only fifteen
years old, leaving his seven brothers for his care. M. Rateb was adamant towards
his fate, he continued his study at The Commercial School, where he attained The
Preparatory Sch., Certificate in / 1935/. He got fond of Typewriters, therefore
he began his career as apprentice typist at Rashad Faroun’s Office. He tried to
work as a government employee and typist, but his master offered him a bit of advice,
to work in free works. He kept his master’s advice, and bought a small shop in Rami
street in Damascus 1938. Then in 1943, he developed his work and transferred to
Al-Abed Building, where court compound transferred there in 1945. Due to his diligence,
aptitude and excellent reputation, he became renowned at that time. He had a dream,
to have an office right on the main street; yet, his dream came true when he established
a company with his uncle Abdul Wahab Khawam, which lasted till the year 1975.
